Delay Guide

Flight Delay Compensation: Rights and Claim Process

When your flight arrives late, EU261 may entitle you to compensation plus care and assistance. Learn what triggers compensation and how much you may receive.

01

When Does Delay Trigger Compensation?

A flight delay must meet specific criteria to qualify for compensation: it must be at least 3 hours at final destination, and the airline must be responsible.

  • Delay measured from scheduled to actual arrival time at final destination
  • Minimum 3-hour delay at destination required
  • Airline operational fault (not extraordinary circumstances) required
  • Includes missed connections if caused by airline delay
02

Compensation Amounts for Delays

Compensation is calculated by distance band. A 3+ hour delay triggers payment ranging from €250-€600.

  • Short-haul (up to 1,500 km): €250
  • Medium-haul (1,500-3,500 km): €400
  • Long-haul (over 3,500 km): €600
  • Reduction of 50% may apply if delay partially caused by airline
03

Care and Assistance Rights

Beyond compensation, airlines must provide support during long delays, including meals, communication, and accommodation.

  • Meals and refreshments aligned with delay length
  • Hotel accommodation if overnight delay occurs
  • Transport to hotel and back to airport
  • Communication costs (email, phone calls, internet)
04

Proof Required for Delay Claims

To successfully claim for delay, gather evidence showing actual flight times and airline responsibility.

  • Boarding pass or confirmation email showing flight details
  • Evidence of actual arrival time (boarding pass, receipt with time)
  • Proof of delay duration (airline statements, airport records)
  • Documentation of expenses if claiming care costs
